Paul Madriani is back in an absorbing new legal thriller by the New York Times bestselling author of The Judge and Undue Influence.
“Riveting …a suspenseful tale, right up to the satisfying climax,” wrote Publishers Weekly in praise of The Judge. “Legal thrillers don’t get much better than this.” Kirkus Reviews hailed Undue Influence as “the courtroom novel of the year.” Now Martini delivers Paul Madriani’s most challenging case yet.
Having moved to San Diego to be closer to the woman in his life, Madriani takes on the case of Jonah Hale, an elderly man in dire straits. As a result of their only child Jessica’s longtime drug addiction, Jonah and his wife have been raising their eight-year-old granddaughter, Amanda. On the heels of Jonah’s multimillion-dollar state lottery win, Jessica revives her interest in mothering. When Jonah won’t deal --- maternal rights for a mega bucks payoff --- Jessica pulls out all the stops.
Enter Zo Suade --- a flamboyant, feminist activist with a talent for making children and their “victimized” mothers disappear. When the next move turns deadly, Madriani finds himself drawn into a web of deceit and high stakes action , in and out of the courtroom.
Rich with characters drawn from today’s headlines, driven by motives both obvious and subtle, The Attorney marks the much-anticipated return of Paul Madriani.

I was in the hospital when I reluctantly started reading The Attorney. It was the only paperback left in the book cart that was not about romance or about the war. The story gripped me so much so that I would not put it down until the nurses turned off the lights at night. I read it between medications, x-rays, physiotherapy, etc. Needless to say, this book made my hospital stay bearable or even enjoyable. When I left the hospital, I made sure that my son passed by a book store where I bought the hard copy of The Arraignment. That very night I ordered the paperbacks of your other remaining books including The Attorney to complete my collection. I finished all these books in less than a month. Now it would be along wait for Double Tap. Thank you and please do not stop writing your wonderful and exciting Paul Madriani series.
I gave away six paperbacks of The Attorney for Christmas and last I heard, there were four more converts.

Just finished The Attorney, my first Steve Martini novel. It won't be my last.

Just finished The Attorney. FANTASTIC!! Found you in the Louisville airport via The Jury a month earlier......Great reads, keep it up and I'm spreading the word.
Ray
I've collected and read all the books, but my favorites are the books with Sarah in them. I feel that I'm there watching her grow up into a young lady. It's fun experiencing Paul's private life along with the fantastic trial plots. Always anticipating your next book.

How much do we really know the people we think we know? Steve Martini in Paul Madriani poses this question while doing his usual masterful legal stratagem, criminal investigative skills, and empathy that is rare in the politico-legal work he has chosen. Paul Madriani and his daughter, Sarah, has just moved to San Diego to start over, and be closer to his new love, Susan McKay. A renewal of old ties draws him to the case of Jonah Hale, a man just trying to get his granddaughter back and ending up getting accused of murder. From the start, Paul's defense strategy has been weak. It is grounded on the theory that someone else - - - a known criminal on the trail of Jonah's wayward daughter Jessica - - - is behind the killing. The problem with the theory is the proof, the search for which may cost more innocent lives. From San Diego to Mexico, from Paul's domestic concerns to the shady world of drug dealing and murder, Steve Martini takes the reader into a breathless tour, ending with a heartbreaking climax. . . - - - BUT HERE'S ONE READER WHO WASN'T HEARTBROKEN. STEVE MARTINI DELIVERS!

A truly first rate novel. I could not put this one down. Mr. Martini is a great storyteller. Read every book and judge for yourself. Grisham has some competition with Mr. Martini. A wonderful line of great books.
Daniel
I loved the book... I'm glad I didn't read too much about it before buying the book. I like being kept in suspense and that's what Steve Martini's books are all about.
Stacy
Great book. Fast paced and so legally accurate.
Mike
Thoroughly enjoyable - a suspenseful mystery to the very end. . . I can honestly recommend any of Mr. Martini's books to my book club.

Once I started, I couldn't put The Attorney down. On behalf of your many thousands of readers, Mr. Martini, please forward our appreciation to Penguin Putnam's Phyllis Gann for "helping" you bring Paul Madriani back. WHAT A READ !! Please don't ever, ever stop writing...

In Steve Martini's novel, The Attorney, I was impressed with how he brought current issues like child abuse and rampant feminist social workers into the story. He also showed how in the small world of politics and law it is not so easy to be impartial by avoiding personal involvements. This is the second book of his I have read.

I just finished this book and really did like it. I always think that maybe this time some gal will snare Paul, but you get him out in the nick of time. This was a very good book and I especially like the ending. Never once suspected (the killer). I give it Four Stars.
Bettye
This was the first of Martinis books I read and I loved it enough that I am on my fifth one. It was great from beginning to end.
April
Very enjoyable book that leaves the reader in suspense to the last pages with many twists and turns.
Kurt
One of the great books from Martini.
Prashant
Just finished this one and found it a little more "conversational" than the other books and very suspenseful. Great writer!
Sue
Just finished reading this book and I did not want to put it down. This book made me want to read more of Steve Martini. I have been a Grisham fan and have all of his books, but I think Mr. Martini is going to take up where Grisham left off, at least for me;... I definitely have to get more of Steve Martini's books.

There isn't anyone within an area code of Martin's level in the legal suspense field today and that includes the names Grisham and Turrow. Steve's books contain the three-dimensional characters, explosive, yet plausible plot twists, legal insight and authenticity that is missing from so much of today's legal thrillers. Paul Madriani is one of the most realistic, most human, most compelling characters ever brought to paper. "The Attorney" has all the intricate plot twists and the multi-layered story of "Undue Influence," my personal favorite in the series, but an even more explosive conclusion. What makes Paul such a compelling character is that he's human, a flawed genius who doesn't always have all the answers. This makes his exploits, particularly the shocking conclusion of "The Attorney" (the best end twist in the series to date) even more believable.
Clete
In a Steve Martini book, the twists and turns never stop and this certainly holds true in "The Attorney." Our hero, Criminal Lawyer Madriani, is at his best pursuing a murder case involving a California Lottery Winner ($86Million - no less), a crusading, man-hating children's rights activist, and an unwed mother on the lam trying to avoid the Mexican drug cartels.
Characters are crisply described, action never slows and the pulse of this book makes the reader feels he or she is on the hunt themselves.
Keep writing Mr. Martini, your reader await your next output!

First book I have read of Steve Martini's... An absolute thriller from the start to the end. Kept me in suspense the whole time.
Christopher
Finished reading my first Steve Martini book, “The Attorney” and thoroughly enjoyed it. Can’t wait to read his other ones! Keep up the good work, Steve!
Peace, Karen
I enjoyed this Madriani book very much. I enjoy Paul Madriani and his partner Harry because they are both smart-asses. The attorney follows the same Madriani plot - Murder, Search for clues, trial, and action ending. If you like this as I do, you'll love the book. At least his villains do not come totally out from left field like some other authors. - Bill

I just finished reading "The Attorney". As always, I thought it was terrific reading and couldn't put it down until I finished it about the middle of the night. I am eagerly awaiting "The Jury".
Janet
Enjoyed it a lot. Must admit the ending really surprised me.
Joan
I love it!!!! I did not want to finish the book. I had an idea of who was with Suade when she was killed; however, my husband who had finished the book before me discouraged me from that idea. I think "Paul" is just a great kind of guy. A great attorney, but a great person too. Steve, keep up the great work and keep writing books like this.

Riveting to say the least. I can usually figure a mystery before the ending, but not this one. Shortly after beginning this book, I was pulled into this well written book and found I absolutely had to finish it, setting aside such unimportant tasks such as sleeping and eating.
Steve
That quirky first person style, with its humorous observations and characterizations is what attracted me to your writing to begin with. . . I just finished The Attorney and it was like welcoming back an old friend. Thank you!
Kris
I have just finished reading The Attorney, which I very much enjoyed. In fact, I think it would make an excellent movie. I have read The Judge and now The Attorney; I will undoubtedly seek your other books for future entertainment. I only get to read 3 or 4 novels a year so I have to choose carefully!
John
I just finished reading your newest book, The Attorney, the first one I’ve read by you and I am hooked!
Rasita
I thought the book was terrific, I read it in three days. This is quick for me, as I have four children and I work full time. It took me longer than usual to figure out “whodunit”, and I must say - - what a shocker! Awesome book!
Tami
Steve Martini is the best at surprise endings.
Mark
What a page-turner. One of the best!! This book was great.

Fabulous story and characterization. - Power house attorney Paul Madriani and his daughter Sarah have moved to San Diego so that they can live closer to his beloved Susan McKay and her two daughters. Susan is the director of Children’s Protective Service, a fierce advocate of children’s rights. Her archenemy is Zolanda Suade, a fanatical self-appointed child advocate. Jonah Hale retains Paul to find his beloved granddaughter Amanda, who has been abducted by her own mother Jessica with the help of Zolanda. When Jonah realizes that the law cannot help him or protect Amanda from her uncaring abusive mother, he vanishes. During his disappearance, someone kills Zolanda. The police arrest Jonah who has no alibi. Paul tries to help his client, but it is Susan who constantly crosses the legal line that leads everyone into danger. Steve Martini has written a legal thriller that will stun everyone with its sucker punch ending. The Attorney returns Paul Madriani to his fans in a story line that is his most suspenseful and tragic to date. Paul and Susan act believable even when she propels them to choose justice over the law. Mr. Martini needs to bring back this delightful cast in future novels that are sure to be thought provoking and exciting.
